Among the most resilient commercial softwoods commercially available, lumber from the Douglas Fir helps comprise the Avenger-class Minesweepers, the only wooden ships still actively used by the United States Navy. With its slightly wavy grain and ability to take a wide variety of different surface treatments, Douglas Fir can serve as a happy middle ground between its straight-laced and more boisterous relatives.
